Deciding on a par

June 21, 2014

Ruth Chang’s TED Talk: How to make hard choices. People deciding on a par put their very self behind an option. ‘Here’s where I stand. Here’s who I am’, unlike drifters who allow the world to write the story of their lives.

Hard choices arises because of an unreflective assumption we make about value. Values like justice, beauty, kindness, are not akin to scientific quantities, like length, mass and weight.

Hard choices are precious opportunities for us to celebrate what is special about the human condition and it is here, in the space of hard choices, that we have the power to create reasons for ourselves to become the distinctive people that we are. ‘Hard choices are not a curse but are God sent.’
